While at the Charlevoix Art Fair this summer, I had a shop owner from the East side of the state ask me about adding Michigan themed pillows to my product-line. We are chatting about selling them in her store. I have had so much fun designing and creating these pillows. There are so many possibilities in playing with color and layout.
I started with my go-to color combination - rainbow. And of course, Alison Glass Fabric. Her fabric colors are so vibrant and inspiring. I used Excel to draw and measure the piecing for this pillow. This is the first time I've used Excel for quilt designing. I usually go with my Electric Quilt company program or hand-sketch.
My next challenge was to find a white fabric that was thick enough to block out the color bleed from the fabrics behind it, but soft enough to create a cozy pillow. After playing with various fabrics, I went with a cotton denim. I really like how it worked!
For the next pillow, I went into my Tula Pink True Colors stash. I was still playing it safe, with rainbow them. I used one of the navy fabrics for the Michigan writing. I thought the wavy print on it was a nice look for the "Great Lakes State!"
This next pillow I used traditional quilt piecing to create an adorable heart. Most of the fabric is from Cotton+Steel - another one of my favorites. I used a small Michigan so that the heart really would really stand out. I am not sure if I should make the state a little bigger. I am going with this size for now.
For my last two pillows, I wanted to use fun floral borders to surround a giant Michigan. These two pillows are 20" x 20" in size and fit IKEA pillow forms perfectly!
All of these pillows are available in my ETSY SHOP. I can't wait to sew-up more in the future!
