SCRAPPY BASKET EXTERIOR TUTORIAL

February 7, 2019

It was time to get my solid scraps organized! I adapted the 1 HOUR BASKET TUTORIAL by, KELBYSEWS to create my bins. What's more fun than creating cute and functional storage solutions???? Why of course - sharing with friends!

BEFORE YOU BEGIN:

You will need to purchase the 1 Hour Basket Pattern by, Kelbysews. At the time of writing, the Kelbysews Pattern is sold for $1.00 here:

https://shop.mybluprint.com/sewing/patterns/1-hour-basket-tutorial/236408

My tutorial has been adapted from this pattern and will ONLY give you instructions on how to create the exterior patchwork blocks and the adjusted dimensions for the interior fabric and fusible fleece.

All instructions for the dimensions of the handles & how to assemble the basket are in the original Kelbysews pattern.

FINISHED SIZE: H: 9” x W: 12” x D: 6”

DIFFICULTY: Beginner

SEAM ALLOWANCE: 1/4” throughout pattern

DIMENSIONS: are written height x width throughout instructions

Please read through all instructions prior to beginning this project.

MATERIALS:

Assorted fabrics to create 44 squares for the exterior fabric. Fabric must be a minimum height & width of 3.5” per square. This is a great project for scrap fabric.

1/2 yard quilter weight cotton fabric for the interior fabric

1/2 yard fusible fleece (such as Pellon 987F)

1 Hour Basket Pattern by, Kelbysews (link above)

SUPPLIES:

Rotary Cutter, Rotary Cutter Mat, Ruler, Pins

CUTTING:

Exterior Fabric: Cut 44 pieces 3.5” x 3.5” squares

Interior Fabric: Cut 2 pieces 12.5” x 18.5”

Fusible Fleece: Cut 2 pieces 12.5” x 18.5”

STEP 1:

Cut out all parts of this pattern.

STEP 2:

Layout the Exterior Fabric cut pieces for two separate blocks. Example of one block shown below:

STEP 3:

For Block 1, begin by sewing the top row of 6 Exterior Fabric pieces (sized: 3.5” x 3.5”) together using a 1/4” seam allowance. Press seams to the right. Sew the remaining 3 rows. Alternate pressing right and left for each row. See diagram below:

Repeat this process for Block 2.

The extra step of changing the direction of the seam pressing between rows will allow you to nest the seams together in the next step to create more accurate corner joining.

STEP 4:

Sew all four rows of Block 1 together. Press seams towards the bottom of block. See diagram below:

Repeat this process for Block 2.

STEP 5:

All of your exterior fabric, interior fabric and fusible fleece preparation is complete. Now you will need to refer to the original 1 Hour Basket Tutorial for instructions on cutting the handles and assembling all of the parts.
